Biography
James London was born in San Francisco (America). Since childhood he loved books, he read so much that in school instead of singing lessons he was allowed to write works. His family was not rich, so Jack had to work since he was 15 years old.
The writer received his first royalty for participating in a literary contest, when he wrote an essay called "Typhoon off the coast of Japan". He advanced other students in the intellectual contest of university, and this made him think over the prospect of becoming a writer.
Jack London baries himself in books, later he becomes a student at the University of California, but there was enough money only for one semester . Then Jack London independently and purposefully works on himself, engaged in self-education (he will tell about this period of his life in the autobiographical novel Martin Eden).
Lack of money makes him go to search for gold. In 1896 he went to Alaska. The golden fever did not enrich the writer, but gave fresh material for new works. 1900 became a year of recognition for Jack London. One after another comes the collections of his stories. He works a lot, writes 2-3 books a year.
London married Elizabeth "Bessie" Maddern on April 7, 1900, the same day The Son of the Wolf was published.
Writing work brought Jack London good money. However, despite high earnings, he constantly needed. London was interested in farming and decided to create an "ideal economy". These attempts collapsed, turning into huge debts.
Jack London died very early. In the last years of his life he began a creative crisis, for some time he was abusing alcohol. Up to 40 years there were problems with the kidneys, tormented by uremia, to facilitate the condition he was prescribed morphine.
On November 22, 1916, the writer died because of poisoning with this narcotic substance. Later, journalists began to rumor that Jack London had committed suicide, but this version did not find confirmation.
The grave of the writer is located in Glen Ellen, California, in Jack's State Park. After his death in 1920, the last novel "The Heart of Three" was published.
